its all good that Celtel has been swallowed by the parent company, Zain, and now we gots all sorts of assurances that the world will be much better than the 2.4 million subscribers that Celtel could garner in the same period that Safaricom scooped 11 million Kenyans into their net...
So yeah, after lots of persuations and arguments about how a less crowded house gives you the upper hand, i finally got myself hooked up with a Zain 3G modem... Yeah the deal sounded very very good. 3k per month for unlimited internet access with potential speeds of 96kbps..Damn wasnt a nigga excited..
Now am looking at this Huawei modem with a look of disdainful disgust...Most of my internet time is spent on downloads and unfortunately Zain wasnt thinking of people like me... This thing cannot achieve more than 10kbps even with a download accelerator.Where the hell is all that bandwidth going??? I thought we was a small house... Can somebody make me understand? Can dial up connections pass the 20kbps point, if so why are they being wachoyo with bandwidth???? Any body from Zain?

You got a 3G Modem but Zain is still on 2G network (more precisely 2.75G(EDGE)). What this means is that you are sharing the same radio resource with voice calls. Now when everybody is making 'free calls' throughout the day, voice traffic is given more priority than data so you will 'enjoy' slow speeds on your 3G modem.
Still EDGE is supposed to give you speeds of 236.8 kbit/s --i.e if your are the only user using data in your area (cell).
Factors that could influence your slow speeds are:
1. Probably your signal strength is weak; you could be far from a zain tower or you live in leafy, hilly area.
2. Too many people using Zain's data in area you are browsing from.
3. To much Zain voice traffic(i guess the free calls are contributing to this)
4. On your Huawei Modem Select Setting>>Choose Connection Type >>GPRS Only.
You should NOT be trying to do a dial-up with Zain. That will give 9.6Kbps at best. Dial-up is old technology, that's why you should make sure your modem is set to GPRS only.
Thanks for illuminating some of the thoughts I've been having Anon..
Well, I sheck the options and HA! there aint no provision for GPRS..Just WCDMA and GSM...Could that mean that this particular modem can only operate with a dial -up connection?...Av switched to GSM only but there isnt much of a change from WCDMA..
Am in a plain area with a tower just five minutes away am looking at it from my window right now!!!
i doubt if there are more than 1000 zain users where am at though am next to a highway..
Maybe its the free calls..I'll hve to wait and see
This is so true, Celtel/Zain EDGE connections are so pathetically slow. I find my Telkom dial-up way faster. Whats more, their customer care always seems to make you feel that ur the only idiot who is getting those slow speeds and the rest of Zains clients are all on the fast track. I thought i was the only one suffering. Anyways i hear a rumuor that they have 3G coming out....can anyone verify??
Oh yeah, last Friday I got this curious phone call from a Zain rep asking all sorts of questions about the Modem. . . I wasted no time in squeezing in my 10 minute MORE BANDWIDTH speech but am guessing the call could indicate some improvements of sorts in the pipeline.
I spied a Dubai blogger. .he and his pals are doing 3G on Zain Dubai already. . .
zain user
men this modem is a piece of crap and let me repeat a piece of crap it has speeds of 36kbps down and 9kbps up so you can just see how slow we are being taken so if you are a serious download freak dont dare waste your 11k on this crap
the zaim modem sucks BIG TIME. I thought that I'd be jazzed by the UNLIMITED option but on doing my analysis right I discovered that im better off with using the safcom since i only used it during the evenings.....now someone tell me is there a way to change over to saf without getting the new saf modem as in just changing the line alone on my current modem.
i'm using a safcom modem with zain line and i'm getting gud speeds. no dialup just gprs connection. kevin, what type of modem r u using? is it the huawei e220?
why can't you use the ericsson w25 router?very good results that you will never regret being a zain.
